Get to know the W2BC ambassadors: Rudy Koopmans

At the Waste2BioComp project, we are proud to work with a network of dedicated professionals helping to drive circular innovation in materials, manufacturing, and beyond. We’re excited to introduce you to one of our ambassadors, Rudy Koopmans, Executive Director at against all odds.

Rudy plays a pivotal role in challenging conventional thinking and driving impactful change through innovation and resilience. As Executive Director at Against All Odds, he brings a bold, forward-thinking perspective to the W2BC community by championing collaboration, creativity, and disruptive solutions in the transition to circularity.

We asked Rudy a few questions to get to know him better and here’s what he had to say:

Today, the plastics industry provides essential materials for a multitude of applications that over the years have been and still are significant contributors to the quality of life for humanity. Tomorrow, however, most applications remain critical but the feedstock for their production needs to become renewable and non-fossil fuel-based. One approach is to valorise the polymeric materials available in the huge volumes of non-valorised biomass for selected applications. In particular, packaging and textiles are key opportunities for alternative bio-based polymers.

All scientific results and the successful realisation of the targeted demonstrators are important. However, a more immediate impact can be anticipated in the field of textiles. Textiles in its various market segments and specifically in (fast) fashion face a major challenge for being in need to become significantly more sustainable and produce substantially less waste. The Waste2BioComp project is a step in the right direction.

Being sustainable and circular implies system thinking. Implementing innovative solutions requires the engagement and actionable support of all stakeholders in the targeted value chain. Everybody is affected. Stakeholders need to understand how and why they need to contribute for the proposed innovation to be successfully implemented.

Eco-friendly requires more than being only bio-based, recyclable or having a lower environmental footprint. The proposed solutions need to offer clear benefits that make socio-economic sense for the various stakeholders in the value chain. Given the variety of partners representing multiple academic and industrial stakeholders, the proposed demonstrators in the W2BC project have a good chance of being commercially implemented. This ultimate success is then clear proof that non-fossil-based materials are a viable alternative.

The target has been set to become climate-neutral in the EU by 2050. Renewable and circular polymeric materials will be essential enablers directly or indirectly. The pace of implementation of existing technologies and technologies under development needs to be significantly increased to achieve this target. The use of biomass will play a key role in this endeavour. The W2BC project sets an example towards fast integration and advancing the bioeconomy.

The EU-funded projects are a small but important contribution to advance the implementation of alternative polymeric materials and associated technologies. The “classic” plastics industry can benefit from polymer technologies that bring additional benefits in terms of performance and reduced carbon footprint in their quest for novel feedstock, renewable materials, and circular value chains. Precisely the multi-partner EU projects covering all key stakeholders are essential enablers for the ultimate commercialisation of products.

Key challenges for the plastics industry are besides overall product cost the availability of sufficient renewable feedstock, low energy manufacturing, recovering materials after use, and reintegration of the polymers or their building blocks back into the production process of valuable products. Any additional partner that offers innovative and economically viable solutions to any or each of these key challenges can help accelerate implementation and ensure the success of the W2BC project and beyond.

We’re thrilled to have Rudy as part of the W2BC ambassador team. His work and insights embody the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives our mission forward.

Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight more ambassadors who are shaping the future of circularity!
