At the Waste2BioComp project, we are proud to work with a network of dedicated professionals helping to drive circular innovation in materials, manufacturing, and beyond. We’re excited to introduce you to one of our ambassadors, Christopher vom Berg, Executive Manager of the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI).
Christopher is a leading voice in the shift toward renewable carbon and sustainable resource use. He brings deep expertise and strategic insight to the W2BC community by advocating for systemic change and fostering collaboration to accelerate the move away from fossil carbon in industry and materials.
We asked Christopher about the importance of EU-funded projects like W2BC and here’s what he had to say:
Converting organic waste into sustainable bio-based components is a vital step towards a more circular and sustainable economy. Converting organic waste into bio-based components provides an alternative to traditional waste management practices, turning what was once considered a problem into a valuable solution for various industries, including textiles, packaging, and construction.
Such processes align perfectly with the principles of renewable carbon and play a crucial role in achieving sustainable carbon cycles. By transforming waste into valuable resources, we extend the lifespan of bio-based feedstock in the technosphere, reducing our reliance on virgin fossil-based raw materials. Consequently, the W2BC project directly aligns with the Renewable Carbon Initiative’s goal of defossilising the chemical and derived materials industry and is a highly relevant project to develop the necessary technologies and create new economic opportunities in the bioeconomy. Substituting fossil carbon with renewable carbon sources is key to addressing climate change and achieving net-zero targets in industry, and first sustainability assessments indicate promising results.
From RCI’s perspective, we are embracing innovative approaches that explore the relevant conversion of organic waste into bio-based value chains in the textiles and packaging sector. This means we are managing waste more effectively and actively participating in the creation of a carbon-circular economy. The W2BC project aligns with global sustainability goals and paves the way for a future where the chemical and materials industries can thrive without compromising our planet’s health.
We’re thrilled to have Christopher as part of the W2BC ambassador team. His work and insights embody the spirit of innovation and collaboration that drives our mission forward.
Stay tuned as we continue to spotlight more ambassadors who are shaping the future of circularity!
